One on One

One on one tutoring using the Barton Reading & Spelling system

Personalized

I assess students individually. I utilize their strengths while continuing to push them in areas that need growth.

Convient Locations

Tutoring will occur at mutually agreed upon location.

These at-risk students present many similar characteristics, such as the inability to retain spelling words, difficulty with spelling (even high frequency words such as because, friend, and does), skipping words while reading, letter confusion particularly with b-d, capital and punctuation issues, and difficulty sounding out known words even though they have been taught phonics.

The Barton System Reading & Spelling system guides students by teaching them the smallest units of sounds and then building on those sounds to create words. Mastering each sound allows students to fully understand the mechanisms of creating a real word. This understanding continues as longer words are taught. This improves vocabulary and reading accuracy which then leads to improved reading comprehension.

Testimonials

Mrs. Stocks tutoring was a game-changer for our 4th grader. She would be so upset with herself when trying and failing to correctly spell and didn't seem to have the tools and certainly the self-confidence in herself as a reader and speller. After only a few sessions with the Barton method Mrs. Stocks uses, I would catch Annabelle repeating the rules to herself, counting syllables, and being so proud of using her rules to spell correctly. She has a renewed sense of confidence and doesn't dread free writing or group work that entails spelling. It it such a pivotal time in her academics, and we are grateful for this system but more importantly the calming resource in Mrs. Stocks.

JH - Parent of 4th Grade Student

Jen is amazing! Since Jen starting working with our son, his confidence has grown and he has grown leaps and bounds in his academic abilities. He has never been a fan or school (or anything remotely related to learning), and our overtures to work with him in school were usually met with an eyeroll. But, Jen found a way to get through to him. Anytime we ask him how was working with Ms. Stocks, his eyes light up and he cannot wait to tell us everything he has learned and the little tricks she taught him to make things easier. She knows how to play to his strengths and push him in the areas where he needs improvement all in a manner that builds his confidence. Again, Jen is amazing!

MJ - Parent of 4th Grade Student

Jennifer has definitely made a difference in the reading abilities of students she tutors. When she takes on a new student, she conferences with the teacher to find out what challenges and strengths each student has, and what the student would benefit most from. I appreciate the feedback she gives me when things are going well or when she notices a deficit that I can also address in the classroom. As a teacher, working with Jennifer is a true collaboration. She is very knowledgeable, professional and prompt. I would recommend her to any parent who is looking for a reading tutor.

JK - 4th Grade Teacher

My son was dreading going to his tutor based on his past experiences. His first session with Mrs. Stocks he did not complain anymore, he actually looked forward to going. Mrs. Stocks makes it enjoyable for the kids while pushing them at the same time. Every child learns differently she’s great at assessing that child and catering to that child’s needs. My kids and I all highly recommend working with Mrs. Stocks!

About Me

Over the past several years, I have been utilizing the Barton Reading & Spelling system to assist individuals with dyslexia at a local private school. I have had the ability to build rapport with teachers, students, parents, and the principal. As I have seen tremendous success using this program, I decided to cast a wider net and tutor independently so I could reach more students who are struggling to reach their highest potentials.

Each of my students has shown vast improvement utilizing this program. In addition to academic success, these students have shown improved confidence. For instance, one of my students loves football, but never wanted to play at recess because he did not feel like he was a good athlete. After working together, his confidence strengthened and he now plays football every day at recess. He also has a more positive attitude about school because of these successes. My background in counseling coupled with my time in school settings will allow me to successfully incorporate social/emotional and educational components into this practice.
